Just So You Know
- 2006 - 2010: collisions between motorists and pedestrians resulted in 484 injuries and six fatalities in the City
of Pasadena - Almost 50% of these collisions involving pedestrians occurred at signalized intersections
- Of the 230 above collisions, only 40 (17%) were a result of a pedestrian violation
- OTS (The Office of Traffic Safety) ranked the City of Pasadena no. 2 for the highest number of pedestrian-related fatal and injury collisions per capita for cities in Category B (cities with a population between 100,000 to 250,000) in 2009
California Vehicle Code (CVC)
If you're a driver, know these 3 basic rules:
- Yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk when they are close enough to constitute a hazard
- Slow down as you approach an occupied crosswalk
- Don't overtake or pass any vehicle that is stopped for a pedestrian in a crosswalk
- For more info: Pedestrian Safety Brochure (PDF)
If you're a pedestrian, know these 4 basic rules:
- Press the pedestrian indication button when one is available
- Only walk when the light for your direction says WALK
- Keep an eye out for drivers making right or left turns
- A flashing DON'T WALK means it's too late to safely start crossing but finish crossing if you're already in the intersection
